INFINITE NEWS
Greetings all
I hope this finds you well, here is my music news for February.
INFINITY BROKE
Last year we recorded our fourth album at Stranded Studios in Bellambi. We bunked up in a caravan by the beach and did it in five days. All the instrumental tracks were recorded live to tape in the same room except for one, which is a home recording by me. It was our first album with new member Tyrone Stevens who has a great chemistry with Scott as the ‘other’ drummer/percussionist. Around half of the album was written together out of noisy improvisational sessions that I would then take home and arrange into ‘song’s’. The track features some excellent and rather raucous sax from Tim Fagan, some dreamy piano from Tim Kevin as well a bit of cherubic backing vocal action from Liz Payne and Amanda Stevens. Given that I mixed this album, it’s hard for me to have perspective, however Scott and Reubs believe it’s ‘our best yet’. We can’t wait for you to hear it!
So…for many years, I and we have relied on your assistance through crowd funding campaigns, whereby albums have been released via my Come To The Dark Side Luke imprint. In exchange for your hard earned, I have put together many special pre-order packages in order to acquire the funding needed to cover costs. As rewarding as this, it’s also exhausting and has been primarily a one man show i.e left up to me.
Therefore…we are very happy to have Love As Fiction Records on board to co-release the Infinity Broke album. However, like us, they need to cover costs and also (hopefully) help us recoup and (hopefully) come out in front so we can tour, rehearse and so forth.
This, dear reader, is where you come in! We have a special pre-order package available which we’d love you to support. The main package can be found HERE. For $100 you receive the album entitled This Masthead on vinyl and CD. You also receive a t-shirt designed by myself, and lastly, but certainly not leastly, you receive an exclusive live mini album on CD. Infinity Broke Live At The Triffid was recorded in 2022 in Brisbane by Scott Mercer and mixed by myself. It was mastered by Chris Colquhoun, and is a storming set featuring amongst others, a 12 minute rendition of Monsoon. If you’re a fan, you’ll want this. There are other packages available as well. The album comes out officially on April 4th and will be followed by an east coast tour in May.
In the meantime some of you may have received a complimentary CD single of the first track to come from This Masthead, entitled Abject Object. The single is an abridged version of the album track and comes with an acoustic solo version of the album track I’m In My Prime. Matt from Love As Fiction lovingly packed, posted and compiled the list of recipients for this. The single features a QR code on the back to pre-order the album. Thanks very much to those of you who have ordered thus far.
Of the single, FBI radio’s Utility Fog said this ‘Jamie Hutchings fronted Bluebottle Kiss from the mid-’90s till the mid-’00s, making abrasive but emotive indie rock with a substantial following. In 2014 he and BBK drummer Jared Harrison formed Infinity Broke with Jamie’s brother Scott Hutchings on second drumkit & percussion, and Reuben Wills on bass (Reuben is the husband of Jamie’s sister, ARIA-award-winning pianist Sophie Hutchings). When I played the debut album I noted the “excellent long rock jams”, with the double drums and bass holding things down while Jamie’s penchant for free jazz avantgardism only emphasises the krautrock feel for me. This first single from their forthcoming album This Masthead has all those elements present and correct, with a helluva vocal performance too.’
Abject Object releases on Fri Feb 14th and will be available on our Bandcamp as well as streaming services. You can pre-save it HERE. The track has already been premiered on Utility Fog on FBI radio and will be given an exclusive online premier via Back Street Mafia on Thur Feb 13th.
We are treading the boards for two live shows in celebration, these are our first shows in over 12 months.
